Oyo/Osun Customs Command Seizes Contraband Worth Over N468 Million in 17 Days

The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded a significant success in its anti-smuggling operations, seizing contraband goods valued at N468,706,602 within the last 17 days.
This was disclosed by Comptroller Joseph Olugbuyi Adelaja, the Customs Area Controller, during a press briefing at the Command’s operational headquarters in Ibadan on Monday, 17th March 2025.
In his address, Comptroller Adelaja noted that the latest seizures reflect the Command’s intensified efforts to combat smuggling and enforce compliance with Customs regulations.
He emphasised that the achievements were made possible through effective intelligence sharing by the Customs Intelligence Unit and the Customs Police Unit, along with the unwavering support of key stakeholders.
“The Command remains committed to the Nigeria Customs Service mandate of revenue generation, facilitation of legitimate trade, and the suppression of smuggling. We have continued to strengthen our efforts to safeguard the nation’s economic interests,” Adelaja stated.

The seized items, which include foreign parboiled rice, cannabis sativa, used tyres, and used clothes, were intercepted through coordinated intelligence and surveillance operations. A breakdown of the seized goods and their Duty Paid Value (DPV) is as follows:
Adelaja revealed that the foreign parboiled rice was concealed in three heavy-duty trucks used to smuggle the prohibited items.
He expressed concern over the risks posed by such illegal activities, noting that they not only undermine the nation’s economic development but also threaten public safety.
The Customs boss issued a stern warning to individuals involved in smuggling, stressing that the Oyo/Osun Area Command will leave no stone unturned in enforcing compliance with Customs laws.
“I would like to sound a note of warning to smugglers who persist in engaging in illegal activities detrimental to our nation’s economic growth. The Oyo/Osun Area Command will intensify efforts to curb smuggling and other illicit trade. We remain resolute in enforcing compliance and protecting the nation’s economy,” he warned.

Adelaja extended his gratitude to the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, fnipr, psc+, and the Management Team for their unwavering support.
He also commended the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Abiodun Makinde, fse, for providing an enabling environment for the Command’s operations.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the role of traditional rulers and sister security agencies in supporting the Command’s anti-smuggling efforts.
He praised the officers and men of the Oyo/Osun Area Command for their dedication and resilience, encouraging them to remain steadfast in the discharge of their duties.
Finally, he expressed his appreciation to the press for their continued support in disseminating accurate information about the Command’s activities.
“The role of the press in informing the public about our operations cannot be overemphasised. Your unwavering support is invaluable to our success,” Adelaja concluded.
