Peter Obi Leads Labour Party Leadership to Borno, Donates N50m for Flood Relief
The Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, alongside the leadership of the Obidient Movement and a newly appointed caretaker committee, visited Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to commiserate with Governor Babagana Zulum and the people of the state following the recent devastating flood that swept through the region.
The flood, which wreaked havoc on the state, claimed lives, destroyed properties, and displaced thousands of residents.
During the visit, Obi announced a donation of N50 million to the emergency relief fund aimed at alleviating the suffering of the affected populace.
He expressed his sorrow over the significant loss of lives and properties in the region.
In a statement released by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi was quoted lamenting the unfortunate events and expressing solidarity with the Borno people.
The former Anambra State governor was accompanied by key figures, including his 2023 running mate, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed; the caretaker committee chair, Senator Nenadi Usman; the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr Yunusa Tanko; and other Labour Party leaders.
The delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, and toured affected areas.
This included a visit to the spare parts market, where traders suffered immense losses, as well as an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Government College, where they met thousands of people displaced by the floods.
Among those they encountered was a grieving woman who had tragically lost her newborn twins in the disaster.
The Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the victims of the floods, with Obi expressing deep concern for those who lost their loved ones, homes, and livelihoods.
The statement assured the people of Borno that the party was dedicated to standing with them in these challenging times, offering resources and assistance to help the state recover.
“We will continue to stand with the people of Borno, providing aid and resources to help them rebuild and recover from this tragedy. As the people of Borno navigate this challenging time, we want them to know they are not alone.
“We are dedicated to helping alleviate the suffering and hardship caused by the floods, which have submerged over half of Maiduguri and displaced thousands of residents,” the statement read.
Obi extended his gratitude to the Borno State government and other levels of government for their swift interventions.
He offered prayers for the victims, asking for God’s comfort for the bereaved and quick recovery for those injured.
“As we reflect on the immense loss and the daunting journey of recovery, may God Almighty grant eternal rest to those who lost their lives, replenish the losses of those who lost their goods, and grant quick healing to those still in the hospital. Above all, may God Almighty continue to bless Borno State and Nigeria,” Obi concluded.
