Planned Protest over 50% Revenue Deduction: Keyamo Meets Aviation Unions Sept. 17

The Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has addressed concerns raised by the aviation sector unions regarding their planned protest over the deduction of 50% of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from aviation agencies. 

The protest, which is scheduled for 18th September 2024, has stirred significant tension within the industry, particularly concerning its potential impact on safety and operations.

In an official statement, Keyamo acknowledged the concerns of the aviation workers, highlighting that the unions’ frustrations over the revenue deduction are understood at the highest levels of government. 

“His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is already reviewing the issues raised by the unions,” the Minister assured, further noting the strain this policy has placed on the aviation sector’s ability to meet critical safety and operational requirements.

The Minister also revealed that a meeting has been scheduled between the Ministry of Aviation and the leadership of the unions on 17th September 2024. 

This meeting is expected to create an open platform where the unions’ concerns will be thoroughly discussed, giving President Tinubu the necessary time to weigh in and address the matter comprehensively. 

Keyamo urged the unions to reconsider their planned protest, appealing for patience and dialogue. 

“We believe that through constructive engagement, a mutually beneficial solution can be reached, ensuring the safety and sustainability of the aviation sector,” he stated.

He further emphasised that the Government remains fully committed to resolving the issue, stressing that the voices of aviation workers are being heard, and the concerns are being addressed with urgency. 

The Minister also extended gratitude to the unions for their patience and understanding during this critical period.

The planned protest has raised concerns within the aviation industry, with stakeholders worried about the potential disruptions it could cause to operations. 

However, with the Ministry’s commitment to dialogue and the intervention of President Tinubu, there is optimism that a solution will be found before the scheduled protest date.

The Minister reiterated the Government’s dedication to ensuring the continued efficient and safe operation of the aviation sector, reassuring all stakeholders that a resolution is on the horizon.
