SLAMEN celebrates International Aircraft Engineers Day, highlights crucial role in aviation safety
The Society of Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers of Nigeria (SLAMEN), representing approximately 4,000 licensed aircraft engineers, proudly joined the global aviation community in celebrating International Aircraft Engineers Day on Friday, May 24, 2024.
Highlighting the significance of the day to air safety in a statement signed by its President, Engr. Mubarak Haladu, SLAMEN said
the International Aircraft Engineers Day acknowledges the vital contributions of aircraft maintenance engineers to the safety, security, and reliability of air travel.
As an affiliate of Aircraft Engineers International (AEI), headquartered in Belgium, SLAMEN emphasised the significance of air safety, aviation maintenance, and the role of maintenance-qualified personnel worldwide.
The Society said it provides its members with professional education through seminars and workshops, ensuring they meet the highest industry standards.
“Aircraft Maintenance Engineers are the unsung heroes of the aviation industry. We are proud to celebrate their dedication and expertise, which keep the flying public safe,” said Engr Mubarak Haladu, President of SLAMEN.
He disclosed that in honor of International Aircraft Engineers Day, SLAMEN has organised a series of events, including a symposium on aircraft maintenance best practices, a training session on new technologies, and an awards ceremony to recognise outstanding contributions to the profession.
These events, according to him, aim to highlight the importance of aircraft maintenance and encourage continuous professional development among engineers.
SLAMEN also called on the Nigerian government and industry stakeholders to support the development of aircraft maintenance infrastructure and training programs in Nigeria.
The Society pointed out the need for standard, equipped hangar facilities and the employment of qualified but unemployed aircraft maintenance engineers by airlines, AMOS-approved maintenance organizations, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), which are currently lacking in the country.
“We believe that investing in aircraft maintenance will not only improve safety and boost the growth of the industry but also save foreign exchange for Nigeria.
“The amount of foreign currency spent on aircraft maintenance abroad can significantly impact Nigeria’s economy if reinvested locally,” Engr Haladu stated.
SLAMEN’s advocacy underscores the importance of aircraft maintenance engineers in certifying aircraft airworthiness, ensuring that every plane in the sky meets rigorous safety standards.
The Society looks forward to continuing its efforts to enhance aviation safety and efficiency, celebrating the dedication and expertise of its members and the global aircraft maintenance community.
“As we honor the critical role of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, we invite everyone to join us in working together to elevate the aviation industry to new heights,” Engr Haladu concluded.
