The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has posted a remarkable revenue performance, generating over N128.4 billion in May 2025.

This figure reflects a significant year-on-year increase, solidifying the command’s reputation as a major contributor to Nigeria’s non-oil revenue drive.

The feat, recorded under the leadership of Comptroller Frank Okechukwu Onyeka, signals the command’s intensified focus on trade facilitation, robust anti-smuggling measures, and enhanced revenue collection processes.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Superintendent of Customs Oscar Ivara, the precise revenue collected in May 2025 stood at N128,446,323,224.79. This represents a substantial leap from the N92,671,603,418.04 generated in May 2024.

The trend of impressive monthly collections appears to be holding steady. In April 2025, the Command raked in N145 billion, compared to N95.5 billion generated in April 2024 – underscoring a sustained upward trajectory.

Since assuming office earlier this year, Comptroller Onyeka has spearheaded a series of reforms aimed at aligning the Command’s operations with national economic goals and the broader vision of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.

“My aim is to generate revenue seamlessly,” Onyeka stated. “I encourage trade facilitation, but the trade has to be legitimate and not harmful to the economy.”

Under his stewardship, the Tin Can Island Command has witnessed improved operational efficiency, tighter enforcement mechanisms, and greater synergy among stakeholders.

His administration has also prioritised transparency and user engagement – efforts that have not gone unnoticed by port users and industry players.

Stakeholders have commended the Command’s heightened level of professionalism and openness, citing a marked improvement in customs-user relations since the start of 2025. Many have expressed confidence in the Command’s ability to sustain this momentum in the months ahead.

With its continued revenue surge and strengthened enforcement capabilities, the Tin Can Island Command remains a key pillar in the NCS’s strategic mission to boost national revenue and facilitate legitimate trade.
