Tincan Customs Command Strengthens Workforce Capacity with Week-Long Senior Officers’ Training

The Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully concluded a week-long in-house training programme aimed at strengthening the capacity, professionalism, and operational efficiency of its senior officers.
The comprehensive training, which took place within the Command’s premises from Monday, 13th to Friday, 17th October 2025, brought together senior officers from various units and departments to deepen their knowledge across critical areas of customs operations.
Declaring the programme open, the Customs Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, underscored the importance of continuous learning and human capacity development within the Service.
He urged participants to make the most of the opportunity, noting that the training represented a strategic investment in personnel development.
“This training is not just a routine exercise but an investment in the growth of our officers,” Onyeka stated. “I encourage all participants to apply the knowledge gained to their daily responsibilities and strive for excellence in service delivery.”
The Customs chief further revealed that while the just-concluded session focused on senior officers, plans were already in motion to organise a similar programme for junior officers. This, he said, would ensure that every cadre within the Command benefits from the ongoing drive toward improved efficiency and professionalism.
Resource persons for the training were drawn from within the Command, showcasing the depth of expertise available internally. Key topics covered during the sessions included Physical Examination (handled by Comptroller Onyeka), Reputation Management, Risk Management and Documentary Checks, Evidence Exploitation, Customs Procedure Codes, and Customs Classification. Others were VIN Valuation, Customs Valuation, Code of Conduct, and Customs Administration.
In his closing remarks, Comptroller Onyeka reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to cultivating a highly skilled, knowledgeable, and proactive workforce capable of addressing the evolving demands of modern customs operations.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing the sessions as insightful and impactful. They commended the Command for organising a programme that blended theoretical knowledge with practical applications relevant to their daily duties.
One of the participants, Assistant Controller Rose Bonat of the Transire Unit, described the exercise as “a laudable and forward-thinking initiative.” According to her, the training exposed officers to updated Standard Operating Procedures and best practices that would significantly enhance their performance.
“This training has broadened my understanding and equipped me with tools that are directly applicable to my role. I commend the leadership of the Command for investing in the professional growth of officers,” AC Bonat stated.
The Tincan Island Port Command, under the leadership of Comptroller Onyeka, continues to prioritise capacity building as a key strategy for achieving greater efficiency and service excellence within the Nigeria Customs Service.
