President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on Saturday, December 20, 2025, commissioned the newly built and upgraded terminal at the General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, Borno State, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure development.

The President, who is also the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, formally inaugurated the facility by cutting the ceremonial tape, signalling the completion and readiness of the modern terminal for operations.

He was joined at the commissioning ceremony by the Executive Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum; the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda; the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, and the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku.

The newly commissioned terminal project is the result of a strategic partnership between the Borno State Government and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, with oversight provided by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to improving airport infrastructure, enhancing passenger experience and strengthening air connectivity in the North-East region.

Speaking at the event, stakeholders described the upgraded terminal as a critical investment that will boost economic activities, facilitate safer and more efficient air travel, and reinforce Maiduguri’s position as a vital gateway to the region.

The facility is expected to improve operational efficiency, accommodate increasing passenger traffic and meet modern aviation standards.

The commissioning ceremony attracted dignitaries from across the country, including government officials, aviation industry stakeholders and traditional leaders, who gathered to witness what was widely described as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The development of the Maiduguri airport terminal is also seen as a symbol of resilience and recovery for Borno State, reflecting ongoing efforts by both the federal and state governments to promote development, security and renewed investor confidence in the region.
