Tinubu Respects NCAA Independence, Has Never Interfered in Aviation Protocols – NCAA Director

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has affirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu holds the regulatory independence of the aviation sector in high regard and has never interfered with the Authority’s oversight functions, particularly in relation to safety and security protocols at airports across the country.

This declaration was made by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Mr Michael Achimugu, amid public speculation and insinuations that the Presidency might influence the ongoing investigation involving renowned Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate.

In a detailed statement on Wednesday, Mr Achimugu reiterated that President Tinubu has always subjected himself to due process and respects the authority of regulatory institutions like the NCAA.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not abuse safety and security protocols at any airport. He recognises the regulatory powers of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and has never interfered or hampered the Authority’s ability to carry out its functions,” Achimugu stated.

He added: “In fact, Mr President made aviation the cornerstone of his economic policies, and this has yielded good fruits for Nigeria.”

Social media platforms had recently been abuzz with suggestions that K1 De Ultimate, allegedly connected to the President, may be shielded from accountability following an incident currently under the NCAA’s purview.

But the NCAA has debunked such insinuations, urging the public to avoid politicising aviation safety matters.

“It is important to clearly and unequivocally state that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not known for abusing safety and security protocols at any airport – either within Nigeria or abroad,” Achimugu said.

Describing the matter as a sensitive regulatory issue rather than a political one, he cautioned: “We caution against attempts to politicise something as vital and sensitive as aviation safety. Aviation laws are not unique to Nigeria – they are global standards designed to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew, regardless of status or office.”

He further lauded President Tinubu’s exemplary conduct at Nigerian airports, highlighting the President’s commitment to the rule of law and safety regulations.

“Nigeria is fortunate to have a President who not only submits himself to routine safety and security checks at our airports, but who also insists on full compliance with applicable protocols. No one is above the law, and that principle is foundational to the President’s leadership,” Achimugu affirmed.

Referencing the earlier statement issued by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, Mr Achimugu said it underscored the administration’s zero tolerance for breaches of aviation safety and protocol.

He concluded with a call for restraint and patience from the public, saying: “We urge the public to allow ongoing investigations to reach their logical conclusion before drawing premature conclusions or making speculative statements. As more evidence becomes available, the relevant authorities will be in a position to act justly and fairly. Perception must not be mistaken for reality.”

The NCAA reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety, security, and regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
