Amaka Sonnberger, Nigerian woman living in Canada, arrested for hate speech, death threat

The Toronto Police Service has arrested Amaka Sonnberger, a Nigerian woman residing in Canada, following her alleged involvement in spreading death threats and hate speech targeting specific Nigerian ethnic groups.

Sonnberger, 46, gained notoriety after a video surfaced online, in which she reportedly threatened to poison the meals of individuals from the Yoruba and Benin ethnicities.

The video, which showed Sonnberger being cheered on by others, also included her urging similar actions against people from other tribes.

The situation escalated on August 28 when a group of concerned Nigerians living in Canada reported Sonnberger to the relevant authorities, according to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).

Shortly afterward, reports began circulating that Sonnberger had been arrested. However, in a subsequent video, she denied these claims, boasting of her Canadian citizenship and asserting that she would remain untouchable by the law.

In a statement released on Sunday – September 1st, 2024, the Canadian police confirmed that Sonnberger had indeed been taken into custody in connection with the video, which they are treating as a hate-motivated offence.

She has been charged with uttering threats and is scheduled to appear in court today – Monday, September 2nd, 2024.

The Toronto Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward by contacting their hotline at 416-808-3500 or by reaching out anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or via their website at www.222tips.com.
