Two Feared Dead as Anthony Joshua’s Convoy Crashes on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway

At least two persons have been confirmed dead following a fatal road traffic accident involving the convoy of British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash occurred on Monday at Makun, near the Sagamu Interchange, on the Ibadan-bound carriageway of the busy highway, a major transport corridor linking Lagos to several states in the South-West and beyond.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command said the vehicle conveying the world-renowned boxer was involved in a collision with another vehicle under circumstances that are still being investigated. The impact reportedly led to the death of two individuals at the scene.

The spokesperson of the command, Babaseyi Oluseyi, disclosed that Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries in the accident and is currently receiving medical attention.

“The Ogun State Police Command confirms that world-renowned boxer, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident on Monday at Makun, Ogun State,” Oluseyi said in a statement.
She added, “The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated. He sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention.”

Oluseyi further confirmed the fatalities arising from the crash, describing the incident as tragic.
“Tragically, two other persons lost their lives at the scene of the accident. The deceased have been conveyed to the morgue, while investigations have commenced to determine the cause of the crash,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State said preliminary findings suggested that excessive speed may have contributed to the accident. An official of the corps explained that the vehicle allegedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle was suspected to be travelling beyond the prescribed speed limit and lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre,” the FRSC officer said.

Authorities from both the police and the FRSC have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. They added that further updates would be provided as more details emerge.

The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has long been notorious for frequent accidents, often attributed to speeding, reckless driving and heavy traffic, prompting renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
