Jimmy Carter, Former U.S. President, Humanitarian Icon, Dies at 100
Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a towering figure in humanitarian work, passed away peacefully on Sunday, 29th December, at his home in Plains, Georgia.
He was 100 years old. The Carter Center confirmed his death in a statement, noting that he was surrounded by his family during his final moments.
Carter, who served a single term as president from 1977 to 1981, went on to redefine his legacy with an extraordinary post-presidential career centred on peace, human rights, and unselfish service.
He became the oldest living former president in U.S. history, and his influence endured long after his time in the White House.
“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, his son, in a heartfelt statement.
“The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honouring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs,” Chip added.
According to reports, Carter’s health had declined over recent years, leading him to opt for hospice care in February 2023.
Despite his ailing health, he remained committed to his humanitarian efforts, continuing his work with Habitat for Humanity and teaching Sunday school at his local church in Plains.
During his presidency, Carter achieved significant milestones, most notably brokering the 1978 Camp David Accords, a historic peace framework between Egypt and Israel.
His tireless efforts to promote international peace, democracy, and human rights earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Carter’s post-presidential life was characterised by an unwavering dedication to humanitarian causes.
His work with the Carter Center focused on combating diseases, promoting fair elections, and advancing global health.
President Joe Biden hailed Carter as “a model of what it means to live a life of meaning and purpose” and described him as a “dear friend.”
President-elect, Donald Trump acknowledged Carter’s profound contributions, stating, “Americans owe the former president a debt of gratitude.”
Preparations are underway for a state funeral, which will include public observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia, the Carter Center announced.
