NiMet, NCCC Seal Plans for Strategic Partnership on Climate Services, Data Management

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have taken steps to strengthen collaboration on climate services, climate data management and national climate resilience initiatives as both institutions seek to improve Nigeria’s response to the growing challenges of climate change.

This commitment was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the NCCC Secretariat, where he was received by the Director-General of the Secretariat, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation in climate science, data sharing, early warning systems, research and the development of evidence-based policies aimed at improving climate adaptation and mitigation efforts across the country.

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Anosike underscored NiMet’s strategic role as the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, explaining that the agency provides the baseline atmospheric data required for climate trend analysis, climate risk assessment and the production of reliable climate projections.

He stressed the importance of closer collaboration between NiMet and the NCCC in jointly developing climate projections, strengthening early warning systems, standardising climate data and conducting research that would support informed policy formulation and decision-making.

According to him, a stronger partnership between both organisations would equip policymakers with localised, science-based information required to implement effective climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

He added that such collaboration would also improve the translation of global climate projections into practical advisories for communities and climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, water resources, health and disaster management.

Prof. Anosike further highlighted the importance of quality meteorological and climate data in attracting international climate finance, noting that credible data remains a critical requirement for accessing global funding opportunities.

He suggested that both institutions could jointly develop funding proposals to support climate resilience programmes, strengthen early warning systems and invest in climate infrastructure projects capable of enhancing Nigeria’s preparedness and response to climate-related risks.

In his response, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, welcomed the NiMet delegation and commended the agency for its continued contributions to weather forecasting and climate services in Nigeria.

Majekodunmi expressed the Council’s readiness to deepen institutional collaboration with NiMet, describing the partnership as vital to advancing Nigeria’s climate agenda and improving the country’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.

As part of the outcome of the meeting, both organisations agreed to formalise their relationship through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The agreement is expected to provide a framework for sustained collaboration in climate services, climate data management, climate research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest.

The meeting concluded with both institutions reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing national climate policy, strengthening institutional cooperation and safeguarding lives, livelihoods and the environment through improved climate services and evidence-based climate action.
