NiMet to Unveil 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction on February 4
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced plans to unveil the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on Tuesday, 4th February 2025.
Themed ‘The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development’, this year’s event underscores the critical importance of timely weather information in fostering resilience across sectors.
The SCP, an annual publication, provides detailed forecasts on climatic variables such as rainfall and temperature across Nigeria.
Released in the first quarter of each year, the publication reflects NiMet’s commitment to advising the government and the public on weather, climate, and water-related issues.
Speaking on the significance of the SCP, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, stated, “The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital weather and climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in sectors such as agriculture, aviation, disaster risk management, health, oil and gas, telecommunications, tourism, transportation (water and land), power (hydro and renewable), and water resources management.”
He added that the SCP also provides insight into the socio-economic implications of expected rainfall and temperature patterns, enabling stakeholders to plan effectively.
The SCP document includes detailed forecasts such as:
Onset and cessation dates of the 2025 rainy season.
Length of the cropping season.
Expected rainfall amounts for all 774 Local Government Areas.
Temperature forecasts from January to May.
Malaria and meningitis vigilance forecasts.
The unveiling ceremony is expected to attract a diverse audience, including representatives from the public and private sectors, development partners, non-governmental organisations, the diplomatic community, and farmer associations.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, will preside over the public presentation of the SCP.
The event will also feature the launch of a summary version for policymakers and translations of the document into three major Nigerian languages, alongside the State of the Climate in Nigeria report.
NiMet assured that it remains steadfast in its mission to provide accurate and timely weather information, ensuring Nigerians are well-equipped to navigate the challenges posed by climate variability.
