Enugu State to Launch Nigeria’s First Zipline, Africa’s Longest Canopy Walkway in N30 Billion Tourism Drive

…State Government embarks on ambitious tourism revolution to grow economy and attract six million visitors by 2027
Enugu State is poised to unveil the first zipline in Nigeria and the longest canopy walkway in Africa, as part of a grand tourism development initiative backed by an unprecedented N30 billion investment.
This forms the first phase of a comprehensive tourism transformation plan by the administration of Governor Peter Mbah, aimed at repositioning Enugu as a prime destination in West Africa.
At a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, revealed that over N13 billion had been approved for the initial rollout of several landmark projects. These projects are expected to elevate the state’s tourism profile, boost economic growth, and create thousands of job opportunities.
Key attractions under development include:
Nsude Pyramid Canopy Walkway
A 600-metre-long canopy walkway—set to become the longest in Nigeria and the first in the South-East—will be constructed in Nsude. The walkway will begin at Ugwu Uto and slope over 500 metres, culminating at the site of the ancient Nsude pyramids.
The project also includes the construction of rondavels (traditional round huts) around the hill, as well as a lighthouse and observatory with a restaurant perched at about 530 metres above sea level.
Ngwo Pine Forest and Nigeria’s First Zipline
The picturesque Ngwo Pine Forest, already popular for photography and sightseeing, will receive a facelift with the addition of rotundas, floral landscapes, and a 300-metre zipline—the first of its kind in Nigeria. This addition is expected to attract adventure seekers and nature lovers from across the country and beyond.
The Cross of Hope at Okpatu Hill
A towering 50-metre cross will be mounted atop a 15-storey structure on Okpatu Hill, reaching a combined height of 630 metres above sea level. Upon completion, this will stand as the tallest cross in Africa, serving as a monumental site for religious tourism and spiritual retreats.
Awhum Waterfall Enhancements
Awhum, one of Nigeria’s most captivating and mystical waterfalls, will benefit from additional canopy walkways and boardwalks to enrich visitor experience and improve accessibility.
Akwuke Beach and Atakwu Waterpark
Plans are underway to establish a state-of-the-art waterpark at Akwuke Beach and Atakwu, complete with experience centres, food courts, and facilities powered by renewable energy sources.
Ovu Lake Golf and Resort
A luxury golf and resort complex will be developed around Ovu Lake, featuring similar experience centres and food courts. A boat jetty is also planned to host world-class aquatic events and entertainment.
Earlier in 2024, the state government engaged the services of renowned tourism consultants, Ambassador Ikechi Uko and Queen Ebele Enemchukwu, to conduct comprehensive assessments across 15 potential tourism sites.
After extensive vetting by Governor Mbah and his team, the first phase of the tourism development plan was approved.
The second phase of the project will encompass even more ambitious developments, including a cable car system connecting Okpatu to Awhum, and the upgrade of tourist attractions in Ezimo, Oji River, Awgwu, Nsukka, and Ezeagu.
According to Governor Mbah’s economic blueprint, tourism will be one of the key drivers to grow the state’s economy from $3 billion to $30 billion. The state targets six million visitors annually by 2027.
Tourism Consultant Ikechi Uko described the project as “the most ambitious tourism investment by any state since Dr. Donald Duke’s legacy in Cross River.” He added, “If you include the new conference centres, the Enugu Air project, the Nike Lake Landmark upgrade, and the revamp of Hotel Presidential, alongside massive infrastructure investments, Enugu is undergoing an unprecedented transformation never before seen in Nigeria. I am honoured to be a part of this.”
The comprehensive tourism revitalisation is a major pillar of Governor Mbah’s “Tomorrow is Here” agenda, signalling Enugu State’s bold leap into becoming one of Africa’s most attractive destinations for leisure, investment, and cultural heritage.
