Six Injured in Abuja–Kaduna Train Derailment, NSIB Launches Investigation

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced a full-scale investigation into the derailment of a Kaduna-bound passenger train, which occurred on Tuesday morning between Kubwa Station and Asham Station, near Abuja.

The incident, which took place at approximately 11:09 a.m. at kilometre 49 of the rail line, left six passengers injured. Authorities have confirmed that there were no fatalities.

A rapid response “go-team” of investigators has already been deployed to the accident site to gather evidence, assess the condition of the rail infrastructure, and engage with relevant stakeholders.

The Bureau stated that the probe would seek to establish both the immediate and underlying causes of the derailment, with a view to issuing safety recommendations to prevent future occurrences.

In a statement, the Director General of NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., expressed the Bureau’s sympathy to those affected.

“We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation,” Badeh said.

The NSIB further assured that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.

The Bureau, a multimodal transport safety agency, is mandated to conduct objective and comprehensive investigations into transport accidents and incidents in Nigeria. Its role, according to officials, is not to apportion blame but to identify safety lapses, determine probable causes, and advocate corrective measures.

The NSIB also extended its support to all affected passengers and called for patience as the investigative process unfolds.
