DHL Aviation Unveils Two Dedicated Boeing 737 Aircraft in Lagos, Boosting Air Cargo Capacity Across West Africa
DHL Aviation has reinforced its long-term commitment to Africa’s economic growth with the unveiling of two fully branded Boeing 737-400 aircraft at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, significantly strengthening its air cargo operations in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
The aircraft, officially presented on 20 January 2026, represent a major expansion of DHL’s dedicated air fleet in Nigeria and are expected to enhance trade connectivity, reduce transit times and improve delivery reliability for businesses operating across West Africa and key global markets.
According to the company, the additional air capacity will provide faster and more predictable access to major Africa–Europe and Africa–Asia trade lanes, supporting the growing logistics needs of businesses in sectors such as e-commerce, perishables, energy, and life sciences and healthcare.
DHL Aviation noted that the development comes at a critical time, as intra-African and international trade volumes continue to rise under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
As the only international express integrator operating a dedicated air network in Sub-Saharan Africa, DHL said it is scaling its aviation uplift to meet increasing demand for reliable, time-definite delivery services.
Speaking on the significance of the investment, Vice President, Operations and Aviation, DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa, Anthony Beckley, said the new aircraft would play a vital role in supporting African businesses seeking greater participation in global trade.

“As trade expands across Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area, businesses are demanding predictable transit times and consistent delivery performance,” Beckley said. “The two dedicated aircraft will be integrated into DHL Aviation’s African air network, strengthening connections on critical Africa–Europe and Africa–Asia trade lanes.”
Beyond expanding air capacity, DHL explained that the investment aligns with its broader strategy to build resilient and sustainable logistics infrastructure across the continent.
The company continues to deploy advanced digital solutions, including AI-enabled route optimisation and digital customs platforms, aimed at improving operational efficiency and customer experience.
In addition, DHL disclosed that it is actively piloting renewable energy solutions and alternative fuel initiatives across its facilities in Africa, as part of its long-term environmental sustainability goals.
Also commenting, Aviation Senior Director, DHL Aviation Sub-Saharan Africa, Riaan Vorster, said the deployment of the two aircraft further strengthens DHL’s position as a key enabler of regional and international trade.
“With this latest investment, DHL Express reaffirms its position as the logistics partner of choice for businesses seeking to grow their presence in regional and global value chains,” Vorster said.
The arrival of the two Boeing 737-400 aircraft in Lagos underscores DHL’s confidence in Nigeria’s strategic role as a logistics hub for West Africa and highlights the company’s continued focus on supporting economic development through improved trade connectivity across the region.
