BASL Maps Out Growth Agenda, Eyes Africa’s Leading Airport Terminal After Strategy Retreat
Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), has unveiled a renewed growth strategy aimed at strengthening leadership, improving service delivery and positioning the Lagos terminal among Africa’s leading airport facilities, following the conclusion of its three-day mid-year management retreat.
The retreat, themed “Leadership for Total Quality Delivery,” brought together the company’s senior executives and key stakeholders to evaluate BASL’s performance, align its leadership team around shared objectives and develop practical strategies for the organisation’s next phase of expansion.
Speaking at the opening session, Chairman of BASL, Dr Wale Babalakin, said the retreat represented a critical moment for the organisation to reflect on its achievements, address emerging challenges and prepare for greater responsibilities as Nigeria’s aviation sector continues to evolve.
Babalakin recalled that the conception of MMA2 as a privately developed and operated airport terminal had initially been met with widespread scepticism, with many doubting whether such a project could succeed in Nigeria.
Despite those reservations, he said the company remained steadfast in pursuing its vision and had successfully demonstrated that private sector investment could play a transformative role in the country’s airport infrastructure development.
According to him, BASL’s ability to operate MMA2 successfully for almost two decades is evidence of the resilience, professionalism and commitment of its workforce.
He attributed the company’s achievements to its unwavering emphasis on competence and integrity, describing both values as the pillars upon which BASL’s continued success has been built.
Babalakin urged members of staff and the management team to continue embracing those principles as the company embarks on a new chapter of growth.
The BASL chairman disclosed that recent progress in resolving issues surrounding the company’s airport concession had created fresh opportunities to reposition MMA2 on the regional and international stage.
He announced that the company was preparing to sign a settlement agreement that would strengthen the terminal’s international profile and support its ambition of becoming one of Africa’s foremost aviation hubs.
According to him, the anticipated agreement represents a major milestone in BASL’s long-running efforts to consolidate its investment and expand the terminal’s operational relevance beyond Nigeria.
Babalakin expressed appreciation to the Federal Government under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its role in addressing long-standing concession matters that had affected the company over the years.
He noted that the progress achieved through government engagement had laid a stronger foundation for future investment and growth.
He, however, emphasised that the opportunities now before BASL also require greater discipline, stronger teamwork and a sustained commitment to operational excellence.
He stressed that the organisation must continue to improve its internal processes while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.
“Our ambition is to establish and operate the best airport terminal not only in Nigeria but across the region. Achieving this goal demands continuous improvement, honest evaluation and unwavering dedication to excellence,” Babalakin stated.
The retreat facilitator and Lead Consultant at O’BIA Consulting, Mrs Olubanwo Adeosun, said the programme enabled the leadership team to take an objective look at BASL’s current realities while identifying the changes needed to secure its long-term aspirations.
She explained that participants engaged in open and honest discussions on the organisation’s strengths, areas requiring improvement and the leadership behaviours necessary to drive sustainable transformation.
According to Adeosun, the willingness of BASL’s leadership to reflect critically on its operations and collectively embrace responsibility for organisational change was one of the retreat’s defining outcomes.
Also speaking, the Acting Chief Operating Officer and Head of Space and Premises Management, Mr Kola Bamigboye, said the retreat had reinvigorated the management team and strengthened its determination to convert strategic discussions into tangible results.
He explained that management would immediately begin implementing the resolutions reached during the retreat by improving leadership coordination, strengthening communication channels, enhancing accountability and ensuring that agreed reforms become part of the company’s everyday operations.
Bamigboye added that BASL would establish mechanisms for monitoring progress to ensure that improvements remain sustainable and measurable.
Throughout the retreat, participants examined issues relating to leadership development, operational efficiency, organisational culture, customer service, quality management and preparations for the company’s planned regional expansion.
The discussions also focused on reinforcing BASL’s capacity to deliver consistent service excellence while responding to the changing needs of airlines, passengers and other airport stakeholders.
At the end of the retreat, BASL reaffirmed its commitment to continuously improving passenger experience at MMA2 through innovation, efficient operations and quality service delivery.
The company also reiterated its determination to strengthen its contribution to Nigeria’s aviation industry while pursuing its long-term vision of operating an airport terminal that meets the highest international standards and serves as a benchmark for excellence across Africa.
