NiMet DG Prof Anosike Named African Public Sector Leader of the Year in Accra
The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been named African Public Sector Leader of the Year at the prestigious 2026 African Leadership Persons of the Year Awards held in Accra, Ghana.
The award ceremony, which took place on Saturday, February 28, formed a high-level side event of the 2026 African Leadership Conference.
Themed “Reimagining African Governance and Development: New Pathways for Economic Transformation and Institutional Renewal,” the conference brought together Heads of State, senior government officials, development partners and institutional leaders from across the continent to deliberate on governance innovation, climate resilience and strategies for sustainable economic transformation.
Professor Anosike received the continental recognition in acknowledgement of what organisers described as his transformational leadership at NiMet.
Under his stewardship, the Agency has significantly strengthened climate services delivery, advanced early warning systems, enhanced aviation meteorology standards and repositioned itself as a strategic institution central to Nigeria’s national development agenda.
According to the organisers, the award recognises public sector leaders who have demonstrated measurable impact within their institutions while advancing reforms that promote accountability, innovation and sustainable development.
Professor Anosike’s leadership was particularly commended for deepening climate intelligence capabilities in Nigeria, at a time when extreme weather events and climate variability continue to pose growing risks to livelihoods, infrastructure and aviation operations.
The African Leadership Persons of the Year Awards are organised by African Leadership Magazine, a leading pan-African publication and policy platform dedicated to promoting leadership excellence, governance reforms and sustainable development across the continent.
Through its annual Persons of the Year (POTY) recognition, the Magazine spotlights leaders across government, business and civil society who are driving institutional renewal and delivering tangible outcomes within their respective spheres of influence.
The 2026 edition of the awards drew an array of distinguished honourees from across Africa’s political and governance landscape.
Among those recognised were John Dramani Mahama, who was named African of the Year; Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, honoured as African Political Leader of the Year; and Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, who received the African Inspirational Leader of the Year award.
The recognition of Professor Anosike underscores NiMet’s growing stature not only within Nigeria but also across the continent. Since assuming office, he has championed reforms aimed at modernising meteorological infrastructure, digitising operational systems and embedding transparency and automation into the Agency’s core processes.
Observers note that these reforms have positioned NiMet as one of the most digitally compliant government institutions in Nigeria.
Industry stakeholders have also pointed to NiMet’s renewed emphasis on data-driven systems and improved inter-agency collaboration as critical factors behind its rising institutional credibility.
By enhancing the accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts and climate advisories, the Agency has strengthened support for key sectors such as agriculture, disaster risk management and aviation.
In the aviation sector, where meteorological precision is essential for safety and operational efficiency, NiMet’s efforts to upgrade standards and align with global best practices have drawn commendation.
The Agency’s drive to expand early warning systems has equally bolstered Nigeria’s capacity to anticipate and mitigate the impacts of severe weather events, thereby contributing to national resilience.
The award in Accra therefore represents not only a personal honour for Professor Anosike but also an affirmation of NiMet’s expanding role as a cornerstone institution in Nigeria’s development architecture.
As African nations grapple with climate change, economic restructuring and governance reforms, institutions capable of delivering reliable climate intelligence and evidence-based services are increasingly viewed as critical to sustainable growth.
For NiMet, the continental accolade signals growing recognition of its transformation journey and reinforces its mandate to continue strengthening meteorological services in support of aviation safety, food security, disaster preparedness and broader economic stability.
