FAAN Reassures Travellers as Ebola Surveillance Intensifies at Nigerian Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has moved to reassure passengers and stakeholders within the aviation sector that stringent health and safety measures have been activated across the nation’s international airports in response to the recent Ebola Virus Disease outbreak concerns reported in parts of Central Africa.

The authority said the precautionary steps were part of ongoing efforts to prevent the importation and spread of infectious diseases through the country’s airports while sustaining confidence in Nigeria’s aviation system.

In a statement released on Wednesday, FAAN disclosed that it had strengthened collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Port Health Services, and other health and aviation stakeholders to improve monitoring and response capabilities at all international terminals.

According to the agency, health screening procedures for arriving passengers have been intensified, particularly for travellers coming from areas identified as high-risk zones.

Officials stationed at the airports are now carrying out enhanced surveillance checks aimed at detecting symptoms associated with Ebola.

FAAN explained that any suspected case identified during the screening process would be isolated immediately and subjected to further medical assessment and secondary examinations in accordance with established international and national health guidelines.

The authority added that emergency response structures had also been strengthened to ensure rapid containment and effective coordination should any health concern arise.

As part of the preventive measures, FAAN noted that airport personnel and frontline workers had received additional sensitisation and operational briefings to improve preparedness, response efficiency, and adherence to safety procedures.

The agency stressed that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, but maintained that proactive surveillance remains essential due to increased international travel and the need to protect public health.

FAAN urged passengers not to panic but to cooperate fully with airport and health officials by complying with screening protocols and reporting symptoms such as fever, weakness, vomiting, or unusual illness where necessary.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe airport operations and ensuring that Nigeria’s gateways remain secure against public health threats.

The statement was signed by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN.
