Spiro, Africa’s largest electric mobility company, has appointed seasoned business leader Anant Badjatya as its new Group Chief Executive Officer, entrusting the former Indofast Energy chief with spearheading the company’s next phase of expansion across the continent.

The announcement comes shortly after the company secured a landmark US$215 million financing round, regarded as one of the biggest investments ever made in Africa’s electric mobility industry.

The fresh capital is expected to bolster Spiro’s ambitions to deepen its presence across existing markets and accelerate the adoption of clean transportation solutions throughout Africa.

In a statement released on Monday, the company said Badjatya brings more than two decades of experience in building and scaling businesses across the electric mobility, energy and industrial sectors, with operations spanning India, the Middle East and Africa.

Before joining Spiro, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Indofast Energy, the joint venture between IndianOil and SUN Mobility.

During his tenure, he oversaw the rapid growth of one of India’s largest battery-swapping networks, comprising more than 1,800 stations and supporting nearly 90,000 vehicles daily.

Spiro said the appointment underscores its determination to strengthen its leadership team as it advances its vision of providing affordable, accessible and environmentally sustainable transport solutions across the continent.

As Group Chief Executive Officer, Badjatya will be responsible for driving the company’s strategic agenda across several key areas, including battery-swapping infrastructure, leasing services, logistics, energy solutions and vehicle manufacturing.

The company also announced that Kaushik Burman, who serves as CEO Mobility, will continue to focus on consolidating Spiro’s market leadership and expanding its fleet operations across the company’s seven current markets and beyond.

Founder and Chairman of Spiro, Gagan Gupta, described the appointment as a significant milestone for the company as it enters a new chapter of growth.

According to him, Spiro is intensifying efforts to transform mobility across Africa through clean and cost-effective transportation solutions, adding that Badjatya’s extensive experience would help unify the company’s strategic initiatives and provide direction for future growth in mobility, technology and energy.

Gupta noted that the company was entering a critical phase of execution and expansion and expressed confidence that the new Group CEO would help reinforce Spiro’s leadership position in the rapidly evolving electric mobility sector.

Speaking on his appointment, Badjatya described Africa as one of the world’s most exciting regions for the development of electric mobility, noting that Spiro had built a strong foundation and a unique platform capable of accelerating the shift towards cleaner transportation systems.

He said he looked forward to collaborating with the company’s workforce, partners and stakeholders to drive greater growth and create lasting impact across African markets.

Spiro has established itself as a dominant player in Africa’s electric mobility landscape, operating the continent’s largest battery-swapping network for electric two-wheel vehicles.

The company disclosed that it currently has more than 100,000 electric motorcycles in operation, supported by over 2,500 battery-swapping stations.

It has also recorded more than 30 million battery swaps, highlighting the increasing acceptance of electric transportation solutions across its markets.

In addition to expanding its mobility ecosystem, Spiro said it is investing in regional production and assembly facilities as part of its commitment to manufacturing electric vehicles in Africa by Africans for both local and international markets.

With a strengthened financial position and a new leadership structure, the company is aiming to accelerate the transition away from costly fossil-fuel-based transport and establish itself as a major force in shaping the future of sustainable mobility in Africa.
