Union Bank Secures PCI DSS v4.0.1 Certification, Reaffirms Commitment to Payment Data Security
Union Bank of Nigeria has attained certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1, strengthening its data protection framework and reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding customers’ payment card information.
The certification, which took effect on 11 August 2026, represents the bank’s continued compliance with one of the foremost global standards for protecting payment card account data.
PCI DSS establishes technical and operational requirements for organisations that store, process or transmit payment card information. Compliance with the standard is designed to reduce the risk of data breaches, financial fraud and other security threats associated with payment card transactions.
Union Bank said the certification provides assurance that its systems and processes for handling customers’ credit and debit card information meet stringent international security requirements.
The assessment covered a wide range of the bank’s operations and payment infrastructure, including network infrastructure, card issuance, automated teller machine (ATM) transactions, point-of-sale (POS) transaction acquiring and payment processing.
Other areas covered by the assessment included reconciliation, settlement, chargeback management, dispute resolution and retail banking operations.
The bank was assessed and certified under the Service Provider category of the PCI DSS framework.
The certification followed a year-long engagement involving quarterly assessments and the participation of departmental, business and functional heads across Union Bank.
The process was conducted in partnership with security firm Digital Encode, while the final independent audit was carried out by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.
Commenting on the achievement, Union Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yetunde B. Oni, said protecting customers’ information remained central to the bank’s operations.
“The security of our customers’ information is central to everything we do at Union Bank,” Oni said.
She added that the certification demonstrated that the bank’s payment systems and processes complied with a rigorous global standard, while also reflecting the commitment of its employees to protecting customer information.
According to her, the achievement underscores the discipline and collective responsibility of the bank’s workforce in maintaining strong safeguards around customer data.
The renewal also ensures that Union Bank maintains uninterrupted PCI DSS certification, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement that banks sustain continuous compliance without any gap.
The latest certification comes amid growing concerns globally over payment fraud, cyber threats and the protection of sensitive financial information as banking services become increasingly digital.
For Union Bank, maintaining compliance with PCI DSS v4.0.1 is expected to further strengthen confidence among customers and stakeholders in the security of its card-payment environment.
The bank said its continued adherence to the standard reflects its broader commitment to maintaining secure payment systems while protecting customers’ financial information across its banking and payment channels.
