The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has formalised an agreement with the Ekiti State Government to provide essential aeronautical meteorological (AEROMET) services at the Ekiti International Cargo Airport.

The partnership was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 6th November 2024, with NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, and the Secretary to the Ekiti State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, in attendance.

The MoU, which initially spans two years, will see both parties working collaboratively to deploy advanced meteorological equipment at the airport.

This investment in state-of-the-art technology aims to ensure accurate and reliable weather data, a critical component in achieving safe flight operations.

Furthermore, the partnership aligns with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), underscoring Ekiti State’s commitment to international aviation safety benchmarks.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Anosike, expressed his appreciation for the collaboration, noting that the agency’s success in providing nationwide meteorological services is strengthened by partnerships with local governments.

“We thank His Excellency, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, for his leadership and for recognising the importance of meteorological data in advancing aviation. This MoU signals a strong partnership and a new beginning between NiMet and Ekiti State,” he said.

Prof. Anosike highlighted the vital role of meteorological services in ensuring aviation safety, which he described as central to NiMet’s mandate.

The data and insights provided by NiMet are expected to be instrumental in safe airport operations and in supporting Ekiti’s broader ambitions to become a strategic hub for air cargo services.

Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, who represented the Ekiti State Government, expressed gratitude for NiMet’s warm reception and underscored the state’s dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities under the agreement.

She stressed that Ekiti is ready to support NiMet’s work at the cargo airport, which she described as “a crucial economic asset for Ekiti State.”

Witnesses to the MoU signing included Barrister Shola Gabriel, NiMet’s Director of Legal Services, and Mr. Tunde Balogun, Permanent Secretary of the Ekiti State Ministry of Environment.

Their presence symbolised the shared commitment between the federal agency and the state in making Ekiti a model for aviation safety and efficiency in Nigeria.

The agreement represents a strategic collaboration that not only advances Ekiti State’s economic aspirations but also underscores NiMet’s role in ensuring that Nigerian airspace is safe, supported by accurate and timely weather forecasts.
