African nations call for restraint amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel

In the wake of Iran’s recent attack on Israel, several African countries have voiced their concerns, urging restraint and emphasising the importance of de-escalating tensions in the already volatile Middle East region.

South Africa, through its Department for International Relations and Cooperation, issued a statement urging all parties to refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions.

The south African nation highlighted the plight of ordinary citizens who often bear the brunt of conflicts and called for a commitment to peaceful resolutions.

Similarly, Nigeria echoed the call for restraint, urging both Iran and Israel to avoid a wider conflict.

The Nigerian Foreign Ministry stressed the universal commitment to peaceful conflict resolution for the advancement of global peace and security.

Kenya’s President William Ruto condemned the attack, warning that it could exacerbate the delicate situation in the Middle East.

Ruto called on Israel to show restraint and stressed the need for condemnation from all peace-loving nations.

Somalia also joined the chorus of voices calling for immediate de-escalation, emphasising the threat that rising hostilities pose to regional stability and global security.

The Somali said there is urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further violence.

Meanwhile, Israel has vowed to retaliate against Iran for the unprecedented drone and missile attack.

However, the Israeli war cabinet has yet to decide on the size and scope of the response, with discussions ongoing regarding the timing and nature of Israel’s actions.

Despite tensions, the United States has signaled that it will not participate in any offensive action against Iran, according to officials familiar with the matter.

Israel has reportedly assured the US that it is not seeking significant escalation with Iran but rather aims to protect and defend itself.

Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz reiterated Israel’s determination to respond to Iran’s attack, pledging to exact a price in a manner and time that suits Israel’s interests.

As the situation continues to unfold, African nations and the international community remain vigilant, calling for dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation and promote peace in the region.
