Ghanaian High Commissioner Commends United Nigeria Airlines, Seeks Stronger Partnership
The Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ambassador Sadiq Abdulai Abu, has commended United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) for its efficient service on the Accra-Abuja route.
Abu gave the commendation when a delegation from United Nigeria Airlines, led by its Director of Administration, Mr Linus Awute, paid a courtesy visit to the Ghana High Commission in Abuja on Wednesday, September 10, 2026.
The visit was aimed at formally welcoming the envoy to Nigeria and conveying the goodwill of the airline’s management and board following his assumption of diplomatic duties in the country.
The visit also took on particular significance because Abu’s first flight into Nigeria after resuming his diplomatic assignment was aboard United Nigeria Airlines.
Speaking on behalf of UNA’s Executive Chairman, Prof Obiora Okonkwo, Awute conveyed the airline’s goodwill to the High Commissioner and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.
He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Okonkwo and Ghana’s President, John Mahama, noting that the connection had further reinforced the airline’s interest in contributing to closer ties between the two countries.
According to him, United Nigeria Airlines views its operations between Ghana and Nigeria as more than a commercial venture, but also as an avenue for promoting stronger diplomatic, economic, business and cultural relations between the two countries.
Awute further drew attention to the significant presence of Ghanaian nationals within the airline’s workforce.
He said several Ghanaian employees occupy important positions within UNA and contribute to the airline’s operational efficiency and safety standards.
The involvement of Ghanaian nationals in the airline, he said, was another reflection of the longstanding people-to-people relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.
Responding, Abu expressed appreciation to the UNA delegation for the courtesy visit and commended the airline for the quality and efficiency of its service on the Accra-Abuja route.
The High Commissioner also expressed interest in building a stronger working relationship between the Ghana High Commission and United Nigeria Airlines.
A major focus of the discussion was Ghana’s forthcoming 70th Independence Anniversary, which will be celebrated on March 6, 2027.
Abu informed the UNA delegation about the planned anniversary activities and invited the airline to explore opportunities for partnership and support as part of the commemorative programme.
He also requested that the airline consider introducing a special corporate travel package for staff of the Ghana High Commission.
In addition, the envoy sought the airline’s support for arrangements relating to official cargo, indicating areas where closer cooperation between the mission and the carrier could be developed.
The requests were positively received by the UNA delegation, which expressed the airline’s readiness to explore possible areas of cooperation with the High Commission.
Presenting a signature gift to the High Commissioner, Awute reiterated United Nigeria Airlines’ commitment to strengthening the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.
He said the airline would continue to leverage its air connectivity between the two countries to promote diplomatic, economic, commercial and cultural exchanges.
Awute said the airline’s brand philosophy, “Flying to Unite,” remained central to its operations and reflected its broader commitment to using aviation as a bridge between communities and countries.
The engagement underscored the growing role of air connectivity in facilitating diplomatic activities, business travel, tourism, trade and people-to-people exchanges between Ghana and Nigeria.
With the High Commissioner’s interest in closer collaboration and UNA’s willingness to explore partnership opportunities, the meeting is expected to open up further areas of cooperation, particularly around Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary and travel and logistics services for the diplomatic mission.
