Bird Strike Grounds United Nigeria Airlines CRJ-900 Aircraft After Safe Landing in Abuja

United Nigeria Airlines has confirmed that one of its CRJ-900 aircraft has been temporarily withdrawn from service following a bird strike incident that occurred during landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday, 14 April 2026.

According to a statement issued by the airline’s Public Relations Office, the affected aircraft was operating Flight UN0579 from the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, and was about to land in Abuja when the incident happened.

The airline clarified that the aircraft departed Kano without incident and completed its flight safely, with the bird strike occurring during the landing phase in Abuja.

Importantly, the airline noted that the bird strike did not cause any disruption to the flight’s schedule, as it was only detected and reported after the aircraft had landed. All passengers disembarked safely, and no injuries were recorded.

In adherence to established aviation safety protocols and its own stringent operational standards, United Nigeria Airlines stated that the aircraft has been withdrawn from active service to undergo thorough technical inspections. Necessary maintenance work will also be carried out before the aircraft is cleared to return to operation.

The airline acknowledged that the temporary grounding of the aircraft may lead to some disruptions across its network, with certain flights potentially affected. It, however, emphasised that passenger safety remains its highest priority.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this unforeseen development may cause to our passengers’ travel plans,” the statement read, reaffirming the airline’s commitment to maintaining safety and operational reliability.

United Nigeria Airlines further disclosed that the latest incident marks the fifth bird strike involving its fleet since January 2026. Despite the recurrence, the airline stressed that each case has been managed in strict compliance with applicable aviation safety regulations and standard operating procedures.

The airline reiterated its resolve to continue implementing proactive measures aimed at mitigating such incidents and enhancing operational efficiency, while expressing appreciation to passengers for their understanding and continued trust.
