Organisers of the Carnival Calabar have announced that the official unveiling of the theme for the 2026 edition of the festival will take place in Lagos on 31 May, as preparations gather momentum for the annual cultural spectacle regarded as Africa’s biggest street dance carnival.

The Carnival Calabar Commission disclosed that the unveiling ceremony will hold at Eko Hotels & Suites and will bring together government officials, diplomats, sponsors, tourism stakeholders and entertainment industry players ahead of the December festivities in Cross River State.

According to the Commission, the annual theme unveiling is a key aspect of preparations for the carnival, as the selected theme serves as the creative foundation for the participating bands, shaping their choreography, costumes, performances and overall artistic presentation during the event.

The organisers noted that the unveiling ceremony also provides an opportunity to deepen partnerships with corporate organisations and members of the international community while promoting the carnival as a major tourism and cultural brand in Africa.

The European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, is expected to attend the event as Special Guest of Honour, while the Portuguese Ambassador to Nigeria, Paulo Santos, will participate as Guest of Honour.

In furtherance of preparations for the unveiling ceremony and the carnival proper, the Chairman of the Carnival Calabar Commission, Gabe Onah, embarked on a strategic engagement with executives of Multichoice as part of efforts to strengthen media partnerships and broaden the event’s international visibility.

During the visit, Dr Onah met with the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Kemi Okunola, as well as the Executive Head of General Entertainment, Busola Tejumola.

He was accompanied by the Lead Marketing Consultant for Carnival Calabar, Mary Ephraim Egbas.

The delegation reportedly briefed the media organisation on plans to leverage digital innovation and streaming technology to beam this year’s carnival activities to audiences across the world.

Organisers believe the initiative will significantly enhance the international profile of the festival and reinforce its position as one of the continent’s foremost cultural and tourism events.

Held annually in December, Carnival Calabar has become a signature event on Nigeria’s tourism calendar, attracting millions of visitors from within and outside the country.

The carnival is celebrated for its vibrant street parades, music, dance, elaborate costumes and cultural displays, which contribute immensely to tourism promotion and economic activities in Cross River State.
