Najomo Charges New NCAA Flight Standards Officers to Champion Aviation Safety, Regulatory Compliance
The Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, has charged newly recruited personnel of the Authority’s Flight Standards Group (FSG) to serve as ambassadors of aviation safety by promoting strict regulatory compliance and upholding the highest professional standards in the discharge of their duties.
Najomo said the responsibility placed on the new officers was critical to strengthening the NCAA’s safety oversight functions and sustaining a proactive safety culture across Nigeria’s aviation industry in line with the standards and recommended practices of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The Director-General gave the charge on Monday during the opening ceremony of a five-day Flight Standards Group indoctrination course, which commenced at the NCAA Lagos Office Annex in Ikeja.
Represented by the Director of Airworthiness Standards and Chairman of the Flight Standards Group, Engr. Godwin Balang, Najomo stressed that the effectiveness of the nation’s aviation regulatory framework depends largely on the competence, integrity and professionalism of those entrusted with oversight responsibilities.
He urged the officers to approach their assignments with dedication, technical excellence and a strong sense of responsibility, noting that their work would directly contribute to maintaining the country’s aviation safety record.
According to him, regulatory compliance remains one of the key pillars of the Authority’s safety oversight mandate, making it imperative for every Flight Standards officer to discharge his or her responsibilities with impartiality, diligence and commitment.
Najomo also reassured the participants of the NCAA management’s commitment to their professional growth, promising continuous training and retraining programmes as well as the provision of the necessary tools and resources required for effective performance.
He said the Authority would continue investing in human capacity development to ensure that its workforce remains equipped to meet emerging challenges within the rapidly evolving global aviation industry.
Also speaking at the event, the Director of Human Resources and Administration, Dr (Mrs) Anastasia Gbem, urged the new personnel to embrace integrity, professionalism and a safety-first mindset throughout their careers.
She reminded them that the reputation of the NCAA as the nation’s aviation regulator depends significantly on the conduct and competence of its personnel, encouraging them to remain committed to the Authority’s core values.
In her opening remarks, the Regional Manager of the NCAA Lagos Office, Mrs Olubukola Teriba, described aviation as a highly dynamic and safety-driven industry where competence and preparedness are indispensable.
She observed that the success of any aviation regulatory system depends heavily on the knowledge, professionalism and readiness of its officers to enforce established regulations without compromise.
While congratulating the newly inducted officers, Teriba charged them to remain committed to ensuring full compliance with established safety standards and regulatory requirements.
The five-day indoctrination programme is expected to equip the new Flight Standards Group personnel with the knowledge, skills and operational understanding required to effectively perform their oversight responsibilities and contribute to the continued enhancement of aviation safety in Nigeria.
