NiMet, AKADEMIYA2063 Partner on AI-Driven Climate Services, Food Security
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AKADEMIYA2063 to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), climate and weather data analytics, climate information services, and evidence-based research aimed at improving climate resilience, agricultural productivity and food security in Nigeria.
The agreement, signed on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, marks a significant step in NiMet’s efforts to harness emerging technologies to enhance weather forecasting, climate services and decision-making while supporting the country’s agricultural sector.
The MoU was signed on behalf of NiMet by its Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, who is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Prof. Charles Anosike.
Representing AKADEMIYA2063 were its Managing Director, Dr. Debisi Araba, and the organisation’s Director of Data Intelligence and Governance as well as National Representative for Senegal, Dr. Racine Ly.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Prof. Anosike said the partnership reflects NiMet’s commitment to positioning itself for the future by embracing artificial intelligence and digital innovation.
According to him, the Agency has already established an AI Research Team to explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning can be integrated into weather forecasting, climate services and operational processes to improve efficiency and service delivery.
He explained that the collaboration with AKADEMIYA2063 would further strengthen these efforts by providing additional technical expertise and research support to accelerate the deployment of AI-driven solutions across the Agency’s operations.
Prof. Anosike noted that the partnership aligns with NiMet’s broader vision of leveraging innovation to provide more accurate weather and climate information that supports disaster preparedness, agricultural planning and sustainable national development.
Also speaking, Managing Director of AKADEMIYA2063, Dr. Debisi Araba, described the agreement as a major milestone in strengthening Africa’s capacity in data, analytics and evidence-based policymaking.
He said combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise in research and data analytics with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would produce practical solutions capable of enhancing climate resilience, improving food security and supporting sustainable development across Nigeria.
Under the terms of the agreement, both organisations will collaborate on applying artificial intelligence to climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making.
The initiative is expected to strengthen AI-enabled climate services while improving agricultural planning and supporting informed policy decisions that respond to the growing challenges posed by climate change.
To ensure effective implementation of the partnership, the two organisations will establish a Joint Technical Committee that will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team.
The committee will identify priority areas for collaboration, coordinate activities under the MoU and develop joint programmes focused on advancing climate services, artificial intelligence research, innovation and sustainable development.
The partnership is expected to contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s climate information systems, enhancing resilience to climate-related risks and improving the availability of reliable weather and climate intelligence to farmers, policymakers and other stakeholders.
