NiMet Inaugurates Innovation Committee to Advance Research, Digital Transformation
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated a Service Innovation Committee aimed at strengthening research and development, accelerating digital transformation and enhancing service delivery in line with the Federal Government’s public service reform agenda.
The committee was inaugurated on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, in response to directives from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation encouraging innovation across public institutions.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, described innovation as one of the defining pillars of the current administration at the agency.
He noted that, particularly within a scientific institution, innovation involves converting scientific discoveries, research outcomes and inventions into practical solutions that create value and improve performance.
Professor Anosike said the agency had implemented several transformative initiatives since he assumed office.
According to him, these include the modernisation of operations, improvements in weather and climate services, stronger stakeholder engagement, enhanced staff capacity, expanded collaborations and the deployment of digital technologies to improve operational efficiency and support decision-making processes.
He explained that these initiatives had not only improved the organisation’s performance but had also created an environment conducive to creativity and innovation.
“The establishment of this Committee therefore formalises our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement,” he stated.
The NiMet boss said the committee would serve as a catalyst for scientific advancement by identifying and promoting innovative climate-smart practices, supporting research and development activities, and providing evidence-based recommendations to help achieve the agency’s strategic objectives.

He further disclosed that the committee would advise management on innovation-related issues and monitor the progress of innovation initiatives across the organisation.
Professor Anosike emphasised that the committee’s work would contribute to strengthening NiMet’s capacity to respond to emerging technological, environmental and stakeholder demands in an increasingly dynamic world.
The inauguration of the Service Innovation Committee, he said, reflects the agency’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, professionalism and innovation, while positioning NiMet to remain at the forefront of meteorological and climate service delivery in Nigeria.
