FAAN Moves to Strengthen Air Cargo Operations with New Stakeholders Registry
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has intensified efforts to enhance efficiency, security, and transparency in Nigeria’s air cargo sector through a comprehensive stakeholder engagement on documentation requirements for the proposed Integrated Cargo Stakeholders Registry (ICSR).
The engagement, organised by FAAN’s Directorate of Cargo Development and Services (DCDS), was held on Friday at the conference room of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
It brought together a broad spectrum of industry operators, including freight forwarders, cargo agents, airlines, ground handling companies, courier service providers, and truck operators within the cargo ecosystem.
At the heart of the discussions was the ongoing documentation exercise aimed at establishing the Integrated Cargo Stakeholders Registry, a centralised database designed to capture and verify all legitimate operators across the air cargo value chain in FAAN-managed airports.
FAAN officials explained that the registry represents a strategic move to streamline operations within the cargo environment by ensuring that only duly documented and authorised stakeholders are granted access to restricted operational zones.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve coordination among operators, boost regulatory compliance, and promote greater transparency in cargo handling processes.
According to the Authority, the introduction of enhanced access control measures tied to the registry will also strengthen security within cargo terminals, reducing the risks associated with unauthorised access and unverified operators. This, in turn, is anticipated to elevate operational standards and align Nigeria’s cargo handling practices with global best practices.
Stakeholders at the session were sensitised on the specific documentation requirements needed to be captured in the registry, as well as the broader implications of the initiative for their day-to-day operations.
FAAN urged all operators to comply fully with the documentation process to ensure seamless integration into the new system once it becomes operational.
Beyond the registry initiative, the Directorate used the forum to highlight other developmental programmes underway to reposition Nigeria’s air cargo industry for sustained growth. These include efforts to modernise cargo infrastructure, improve service delivery, and foster a more business-friendly environment for logistics and aviation stakeholders.
Industry participants welcomed the engagement, describing it as a timely intervention that would help sanitise the cargo space, eliminate inefficiencies, and support the long-term development of the sector.
The move by FAAN underscores its commitment to building a more structured, secure, and globally competitive air cargo system, as Nigeria seeks to unlock the full economic potential of its aviation and logistics industries.
