Ethiopian Airlines Boss Salutes Keyamo Over AfDB Aviation Appointment, Pledges Support for $7bn African Transformation Agenda
The Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr Mesfin Tasew, has hailed the leadership qualities of Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, following his appointment by the African Development Bank (AfDB) as Champion of the $7 billion Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme for Africa (IATP), describing the development as a clear acknowledgement of the minister’s commitment to the advancement of aviation on the continent.
In a congratulatory message personally signed and addressed to the Nigerian minister, Tasew said Keyamo’s emergence as the face of the ambitious continental aviation initiative was a testament to the confidence African leaders and institutions have in his ability to champion reforms capable of transforming the sector and unlocking new opportunities for growth.
The Ethiopian Airlines chief noted that the appointment by the AfDB was not only an honour for Nigeria, but also a significant endorsement of Keyamo’s vision and efforts towards strengthening the aviation industry in Africa.
“On behalf of Ethiopian Airlines Group and myself, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on your appointment by the African Development Bank as the Champion of the $7 billion Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme for Africa. This recognition is a testament to your visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing aviation in Nigeria and across the continent,” Tasew wrote.
According to him, the confidence placed in the Nigerian aviation minister by the AfDB highlights Africa’s collective belief in his ability to lead a transformative agenda aimed at modernising the continent’s aviation ecosystem and attracting the strategic investments required for long-term sustainability.
He observed that the appointment comes at a crucial period in Africa’s development when air transport is increasingly being recognised as a powerful driver of economic growth, trade expansion, tourism development and stronger people-to-people relations among African countries.
Tasew reiterated Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to the development and integration of African aviation and expressed optimism that the implementation of the Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme would provide significant benefits for airlines, airports, investors and other key players across the aviation industry.
“We are confident that under your stewardship, the Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme will unlock new opportunities for African airlines, airports and aviation stakeholders. We look forward to collaborating with you and supporting this landmark initiative that will shape the future of African aviation,” he stated.
The Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO further indicated that the airline was ready to work closely with Keyamo and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the programme, which is expected to serve as a catalyst for the modernisation and expansion of Africa’s air transport infrastructure.
The message from the head of Africa’s largest airline represents one of the strongest endorsements yet of Keyamo’s new continental role and underscores the growing support from leading institutions and industry stakeholders for Nigeria’s involvement in shaping the future of African aviation.
Observers say the backing of Ethiopian Airlines, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most successful carriers, is significant given the airline’s reputation for spearheading aviation development and connectivity across the continent.
The Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme, valued at $7 billion, is designed to accelerate the development of aviation infrastructure, enhance connectivity, attract investment and strengthen the competitiveness of African airlines in the global market.
Since his appointment as AfDB’s Aviation Champion, Keyamo has continued to receive accolades from governments, aviation experts and industry players, with many describing the development as recognition of Nigeria’s increasingly prominent role in continental aviation affairs.
The congratulatory message from Tasew also highlights the importance of collaboration among African nations and institutions in pursuing a common vision of a more integrated, efficient and prosperous aviation sector capable of supporting the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and wider economic development across the continent.
The statement was disclosed on Thursday by Mr Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
