Fidelity Bank Distributes 2,000 Food Packs to Abeokuta Residents, Deepens Food Security Drive
Fidelity Bank Plc has distributed more than 2,000 food packs to vulnerable residents of Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of its efforts to tackle hunger, support livelihoods and strengthen food security across Nigeria.
The donation was made through the bank’s Fidelity Food Bank Initiative during an outreach programme held at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cathedral, Itesi, Adatan, Abeokuta.
The initiative, which forms part of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, is designed to provide immediate food relief to vulnerable households while contributing to broader community development and social welfare.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the Regional Bank Head, South West 1, Fidelity Bank Plc, Folaranmi Jemirin, said the initiative had provided more than 300,000 food packs to beneficiaries across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones since its launch in 2023.
Jemirin said the programme reflected Fidelity Bank’s commitment to supporting communities where it operates and addressing some of the socio-economic challenges affecting vulnerable Nigerians.
He linked the Food Bank Initiative to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2, which seeks to achieve Zero Hunger, stressing that the bank regarded food security as an important component of sustainable community development.
“At Fidelity Bank, we remain committed to implementing Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives that improve the living conditions of our host communities and contribute to sustainable development.
“Through our Food Bank Initiative, we are not only providing relief to vulnerable families but also supporting the global goal of ending hunger and ensuring food security for all,” he said.
According to him, the bank’s intervention in Abeokuta goes beyond the distribution of food items, with Fidelity Bank also investing in areas such as education, youth rehabilitation, women’s economic empowerment, social welfare and other community-focused programmes.
Jemirin explained that the food distribution was intended not only to provide immediate assistance but also to strengthen families and communities by offering practical support to people facing economic difficulties.
“This initiative is about more than distributing food items. It is about restoring hope, strengthening communities, uplifting families, and providing meaningful support that contributes to their wellbeing,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to the Catholic Diocese and other partners for supporting the initiative and facilitating its implementation in Abeokuta.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Cathedral Administrator, Rev. Fr. Dominic Olagbaju, commended Fidelity Bank for extending the Food Bank Initiative to the community.
Olagbaju said the gesture demonstrated the bank’s concern for vulnerable members of society and its willingness to work with religious and community institutions to address social challenges.
“We sincerely appreciate Fidelity Bank for counting the Abeokuta community worthy of benefiting from this noble initiative. This gesture reflects a genuine compassion and a strong commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society. We commend the bank for consistently extending helping hands to communities and partnering with institutions like the Church to make a meaningful social impact,” he said.
Launched in 2023, the Fidelity Food Bank Initiative has grown into one of the bank’s major social intervention programmes, providing food assistance to vulnerable households in different parts of the country.
The initiative operates through partnerships with religious institutions, community organisations and other stakeholders, enabling the bank to reach beneficiaries within local communities.
The bank said the programme was designed to complement its wider efforts to promote inclusive development and improve the wellbeing of Nigerians, particularly people and households facing economic hardship.
The Abeokuta intervention is therefore part of a broader nationwide campaign through which Fidelity Bank seeks to combine financial services with community-focused interventions aimed at improving living conditions.
Beyond food security, the bank has continued to identify education, youth development, women’s economic empowerment and social welfare as key areas for its community investments.
Fidelity Bank Plc is a full-fledged Commercial Deposit Money Bank serving more than 10 million customers through digital banking channels and its 255 business offices across Nigeria, as well as its United Kingdom subsidiary, FidBank UK Limited.
