NCAA, NNPCL Deepen Partnership on Aviation Safety Guidelines

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited have moved to strengthen collaboration on aviation safety guidelines as part of efforts to enhance safety standards within Nigeria’s aviation sector.

This commitment was reaffirmed on Friday during a courtesy visit by a delegation from NNPCL to the headquarters of the NCAA in Abuja.

The team from NNPCL was led by the company’s Manager, Environmental Strategy, Policy and Standards, Edwin Aboh, who met with the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Chris Najomo.

Speaking during the meeting, Capt. Najomo, who was represented by the Director of Airworthiness Standards and Chairman of the Flight Standards Group, Godwin Balang, emphasised the NCAA’s commitment to maintaining high aviation safety standards through effective regulation and collaboration with critical stakeholders.

Balang highlighted the Authority’s statutory responsibilities in regulating aviation safety and noted the successes recorded by Nigeria in global aviation oversight assessments.

He specifically referenced the recent International Civil Aviation Organisation Coordinated Validation Mission, during which Nigeria attained a record 91.4 per cent aviation safety rating.

According to him, the achievement reflects the country’s growing compliance with international aviation safety standards and demonstrates the NCAA’s commitment to strengthening oversight mechanisms across the industry.

Responding, Dr Aboh expressed appreciation to the NCAA management for the opportunity to engage with the Authority, stressing that NNPCL recognises the strategic role of the aviation regulator in ensuring safety within aviation-related operations.

He disclosed that the national oil company is currently developing its aviation safety guidelines and expressed confidence that the NCAA would provide the technical support and regulatory guidance required to ensure the framework aligns with global best practices.

Aboh further noted that stronger collaboration between both organisations would enhance operational safety and improve compliance in aviation-related activities linked to the energy sector.

Senior officials of the NCAA present at the meeting included the Director of Legal Services and Company Secretary, Mary Tufano-Eche, and the Director of Air Transport Regulation, Olayinka Babaoye-Iriobe, alongside other members of staff.
