The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Professor Charles Anosike, has intensified efforts to strengthen meteorological research and improve weather service delivery through strategic international collaboration, particularly in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and aviation research.

Anosike advanced this objective during a high-level meeting with KOH LI-NA, Director-General of the Meteorological Service Singapore, on the sidelines of Ecosperity Week 2026 held in Singapore on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

The engagement focused on areas of mutual interest between both meteorological agencies, especially the application of emerging technologies to improve forecasting accuracy, operational efficiency and service delivery across critical sectors of the economy.

During the discussions, both leaders acknowledged the similarities in the tropical weather patterns experienced by Nigeria and Singapore, as well as the central role meteorological science plays in supporting aviation operations in both countries.

The meeting explored opportunities for collaboration between the Meteorological Service Singapore and NiMet in accelerating the evaluation and integration of Artificial Intelligence models into meteorological operations.

The proposed partnership is expected to improve the speed, precision and downscaling capability of weather forecasts.

Officials noted that enhanced forecasting systems would provide greater socio-economic support for key sectors including aviation, agriculture, marine services, healthcare and disaster risk reduction.

Both agencies are ISO-certified for aviation meteorological services, a development which further strengthens prospects for technical cooperation.

Building on the successful joint aviation research collaboration already existing between Singapore’s meteorological and civil aviation authorities, the meeting also examined ways of replicating similar provider-user co-developed solutions within Nigeria’s aviation industry.

The discussions further covered issues surrounding cost-recovery models and the legal frameworks guiding meteorological operations, as well as the use of Artificial Intelligence to boost manpower productivity and institutional efficiency.

Also highlighted was the importance of Quality Management Systems in promoting operational excellence and fostering a healthy working environment within meteorological institutions.

Nigeria and Singapore are both members of the World Meteorological Organization. While Nigeria hosts the WMO Office for North, Central and West Africa, Singapore hosts the WMO Regional Office for Asia and the South-West Pacific.

Both Permanent Representatives stressed that stronger global partnerships, cross-border cooperation and continuous mutual learning remain critical to improving meteorological capacity, enhancing forecast accuracy and delivering life-saving early warning systems to vulnerable populations around the world.
