NiMet, AATF Seal Strategic Pact to Boost Climate-Resilient Farming in Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the adoption of climate-resilient agricultural practices across the country.
The agreement, formalised yesterday at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, aims to equip Nigerian farmers with the tools, skills, and technologies needed to withstand the growing impacts of climate change.
Under the pact, both organisations will collaborate on the development of climate-smart weather tools, targeted capacity building for farmers, and the promotion of advanced agricultural technologies to fortify value chains.
Special emphasis will be placed on supporting women and youth-led micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in agriculture.
NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, described the partnership as a crucial step towards safeguarding the future of Nigeria’s agriculture.
“For agriculture to be truly climate-resilient, access to reliable weather and climate information is essential,” Anosike stated. “This MoU enables us to combine our expertise with AATF to deliver impactful solutions to farmers.”
AATF’s Regional Director, Dr Jean Baptiste Tignegre, said the foundation remains committed to removing the barriers preventing smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa from accessing transformative agricultural innovations.
“This partnership is an important step in ensuring that farmers in Nigeria are better equipped to face climate challenges,” Tignegre explained. “By working with NiMet, we can scale innovations that improve food security and strengthen livelihoods.”
The agreement outlines collaborative efforts in four key areas:
Development of climate-smart weather support tools tailored for women and youth-led MSMEs in agriculture.
Capacity building to improve farmers’ skills in using climate-smart agricultural tools.
Technical support in selected project locations nationwide.
Joint development of funding proposals for climate-smart agricultural technologies.
The MoU will run until 31 January 2028, providing a framework for transparent project implementation, joint planning, and accountability. Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to helping farmers adapt to climate variability, fortifying Nigeria’s agricultural value chains, and contributing to long-term food security.
