Abbey Bank Plc is set to broaden its presence in Nigeria’s financial services industry following approval by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to transition from a mortgage bank to a regional commercial bank, with the commencement of commercial banking operations expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The development marks a major shift for the financial institution, formerly known as Abbey Mortgage Bank Plc, which has spent more than three decades providing mortgage financing, real estate finance and related financial services.

The transition is expected to expand the bank’s business scope, allowing it to position itself to serve a wider range of customers across retail, business and corporate banking, while building on its existing experience in mortgage finance.

In preparation for the new phase, Abbey Bank is strengthening its institutional capacity, upgrading its digital banking infrastructure, improving operational processes and refreshing its brand identity to reflect its expanded business ambitions.

The bank said the transformation was not merely a change of name or banking licence but part of a broader strategy to improve access to financial services, deepen customer relationships and create new opportunities for individuals, families and businesses.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abbey Bank Plc, Mr Mobolaji Adewumi, described 2026 as a defining period in the institution’s development, noting that the regulatory approval reflected years of investment in building the bank.

“The year 2026 represents a defining moment in the history of Abbey. Our approval to transition to commercial banking is a testament to the work invested in building this institution and the confidence placed in us by our regulators, shareholders, customers and employees,” Adewumi said.

He explained that the bank intended to leverage its experience in mortgage banking and real estate finance as it prepared to meet a broader range of financial needs.

According to him, the transition would create opportunities for Abbey to develop its services and respond more effectively to the changing expectations of customers in Nigeria’s financial services market.

“Our ambition is to make banking more accessible, more responsive and more relevant to the aspirations of individuals, families and businesses,” he said.

Adewumi added that the bank’s immediate priority was to ensure a seamless transition to commercial banking while maintaining service quality and the confidence of existing customers.

“As we prepare for the commencement of commercial banking operations, our focus remains on delivering a seamless transition, strengthening our capabilities and ensuring that our customers continue to experience the trust, service and commitment that define Abbey,” he said.

He noted that the bank’s next phase would focus on creating more opportunities for the individuals and businesses it serves.

Abbey Bank’s planned expansion comes against the backdrop of improved financial performance in 2025, when its profit before tax increased to N3.12 billion from N1.22 billion recorded in 2024.

The figures represent an increase of N1.9 billion, or approximately 155.7 per cent, in profit before tax within one year.

The improved performance provides a financial foundation for the bank as it prepares for the demands of operating under a commercial banking licence.

However, sustaining this momentum will require the institution to maintain profitability, strengthen its financial position and manage the risks associated with expanding its operations and customer base.

The transition also presents an opportunity for the bank to diversify its revenue sources and develop a broader portfolio of financial services beyond its traditional mortgage and real estate financing activities.

Digital banking takes centre stage

Technology is expected to play a central role in Abbey Bank’s transition, with the institution investing in digital infrastructure to improve service delivery and make banking more accessible and convenient.

As part of its preparations, the bank is advancing technology integration, strengthening operational processes and facilitating the migration of customers to an enhanced core banking platform.

The upgrade is intended to support the institution’s expanded operations and provide the technological foundation required to serve customers across different segments of the market.

An effective digital banking platform could also help improve transaction processing, service accessibility and operational efficiency as the bank takes on a broader range of banking activities.

The bank’s transition will nevertheless require careful coordination to ensure that technology upgrades and changes to its operating systems do not disrupt services to existing customers.

Maintaining customer confidence throughout the process will be particularly important as the institution moves from its established mortgage banking business into a broader commercial banking environment.

Beyond technology and service expansion, Abbey Bank said it would maintain a strong focus on corporate governance, prudent risk management, regulatory compliance and responsible financial innovation.

These priorities are expected to guide the institution as it prepares to operate within the regional commercial banking segment, where effective risk controls, adequate capital and sound operational practices are essential to sustainable growth.

The bank’s experience in mortgage financing and real estate development provides an established business foundation, while its planned expansion is intended to position it to respond to a wider range of financial requirements.

Nevertheless, the success of the transition will depend on how effectively Abbey translates its regulatory approval, improved earnings and technology investments into competitive products, reliable services and sustained financial performance.

With the commencement of commercial banking operations scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, Abbey Bank is entering a new phase in its corporate history, seeking to combine its experience in mortgage finance with a broader ambition to serve individuals, entrepreneurs and businesses across Nigeria.

The coming months will therefore be critical as the institution completes its preparations and works towards delivering on its expansion plans while preserving the customer relationships and institutional experience developed over more than three decades.
